Located just north of the Colorado border, the Grand Encampment was a copper sensation from 1898 to 1908. A 16-mile tramway was built from the mines to a large smelter at Encampment, and a railway was built. Six communities flourished and vanished in the Sierra Madre Mountains, including Battle at 10,000 feet. It’s a most scenic area with a vibrant history, with connections to Rhyolite and the Death Valley area.
