There Were Giants, by Maurice Helland. Subtitled “The Life of James H, Wilbur.” Self-published in Yakima, Wash., 1980. Ex-library. Father Wilbur, from New York, was a giant of a man at six foot-three and nearly 300 pounds. He arrived in Oregon City with his wife Lucretia in June 1847, five months before the Whitman massacre. In 1859 they moved to Fort Simcoe on the Yakima Reservation, where he was Indian Agent from 1864 to 1882. A variety of illustrations. 192 pp., paperback.
