Now within Death Valley National Park, Greenwater was a spectacular boom-and-bust camp in 1906-07. It grew to an estimated 2,000 people based on impressive surface showings of copper and the backing of some of the major mining financiers, such as Charles Schwab and William Clark.
Death Valley Scotty and Dad Fairbanks were among those who frequented Greenwater. There were two newspapers and the popular Death Valley Chuckwalla.
Two of the mining companies sunk deep shafts, but no bodies of copper ore of commercial quality were ever found. By 1911 the site was completely abandoned, and remains so today. The publication also covers nearby Gold Valley.
