Depression Era Post Offices in Oregon by Kim Emerson
In the state of Oregon, 16 historic post office buildings (Astoria, Bend, Burns, Coos Bay, Portland, Eugene, Grants Pass, Gresham, Hood River, Lakeview, McMinnville, Newberg, Ontario, Salem, St. Johns, Tillamook) were constructed by the Public Works Administration under President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's New Deal plan during the years 1933 through 1941 of the Great Depression. Several of them are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This publication provides an inventory of these post offices along with photos of the structures, interiors, and art work. This publication is based on a dissertation entitled "Adaptive Use Guidelines for Depression Era Post Offices in Oregon" submitted to the Historic Preservation Committee, School of Architecture, University of Oregon, 1989.
