Troy, Nevada and the Grant Range by Jeanne Sharp Howerton
Western Places Volume 10-4

This book covers an isolated area of eastern Nye County, Nevada.  The Grant and Quinn Canyon Ranges are wooded and beautiful, with streams flowing out that nourished an extensive ranching community.  Jeanne is the best person to write this book, as she grew up on Blue Eagle Ranch, and the Grant Range was her back yard.

The mountains supported mining, beginning in 1868 when a British company began mining at Troy, which proved a failure.  Over the years numerous mines were opened, none of them very successful.

The book covers an Indian massacre, transportation routes and scientific expeditions, a visit by John Muir, ranching families, a shooting, the Great Race and even the crash of a bomber.

Paperback, 88 pages, many in color
