With its broad river and forested mountains, Pend Oreille County retains the beauty of a frontier area.  It was not until the 1890s that this area was settled, and when Pend Oreille County was created in 1911, it became the last new county in Washington, occupying the far northeast corner of the state. Early travel was by river, and later a railroad connected the communities.  There’s the story of the train that went into Chain Lake, and a first-hand account of a harrowing escape from a forest fire in 1910.  This publication has numerous early photos, as well as color pictures of many current buildings.
