Skidoo! by Alan H. Patera and David A. Wright

Skidoo!  What a romantic name for a mining boom town that flourished for a few good years in a remote and unlikely location!  It is located on the top of the central portion of the Panamint Range on the west flank of Death Valley. In its heydey (1906-1909), it was in one of the most remote corners of the American West.  Today the site is in Death Valley National Park and is still one of the most remote locations that can be reached by road.

Skidoo had no water and was not on the way to anywhere.  It sprang into being for the sole purpose of providing services close to the most best mines of a promising mining district.  It survived while the Skidoo Mining Company was producing.  When mining stopped, the camp was dead.  Today there is scarcely a vestige left of this town (except the mill) that had once made the word Skidoo! famous in the mining world and an object of curiosity in the public consciousness.

Paperback, 49 pages, 8.5 x 11 inches. This book contains numerous photographs, both 19th century ones and others taken recently.  People and places are indexed.
